Home Care for Eating Disorder Recovery

Step 1: 30 Minute Consultation via Phone or Zoom

The consultation is an essential first step in understanding your needs and creating a personalized plan for our work together. This 30-minute conversation is designed to be relaxed, supportive, and informative, setting the stage for your in-home session.

During the consultation, we’ll:

1. Explore Your Goals: I’ll ask what brought you to me, your challenges, and what you want to achieve. Whether you’re seeking recovery from disordered eating, body dysmorphia, or improved body connection to your body, this is your time to share what feels most important.

2. Assess Your Needs: I’ll gather relevant details about your physical, emotional, and environmental needs to ensure our in-home session is tailored to you. I have a network of specialists I can refer you to if we find your needs are beyond my scope of practice.

3. Outline My Approach: I’ll explain how I work, including techniques like sensory modulation, posture awareness, healthy stress, and personalized goal setting.

4. Discuss Logistics: We’ll review scheduling, and I will answer any questions you may have. After our consultation, I will email you intake forms to fill out before our first in-person visit.

This consultation ensures you feel informed, confident, and excited about your in-home session. Together, we’ll take the first steps toward achieving your goals in a manageable and empowering way.

Step 2: Your First Home Session

Why home care for disordered eating and body dysmorphia? Recovering in a home environment enhances outcomes by providing familiarity, comfort, and the opportunity to apply tools directly to daily life, fostering sustainable habits and long-term success. It also empowers individuals to build resilience in their own space, supported by their natural routines and personal support systems.*

A typical first home session includes the following:

1. Creating a Comfortable Space: I’ll arrive ready to create a safe and supportive environment where you feel at ease—both physically and emotionally. This session is designed to meet you exactly where you are, literally and figuratively.

2. Getting to Know You: We’ll begin with a relaxed, judgment-free conversation about your concerns, history, and aspirations. Whether you’re seeking eating disorder recovery, somatic healing, or a deeper connection with your body, this is your time to share what feels most important. I’ll listen with care to tailor the session to your unique needs.

3. Practical Work: I’ll guide you through personalized techniques and strategies that fit seamlessly into your home environment. This may include:

  • Sensory modulation exercises to help decrease sensory overwhelm.
  • Posture awareness and alignment adjustments to improve circulation and organ function.
  • Vagus nerve stimulation to facilitate the calming effect of the sympathetic nervous system. Centering activities to enhance body connection and improve alignment.

4. Personalized Plan: By the end of our session, you’ll have a clear set of customized strategies to take the next steps in your journey. These tools empower you and help you build confidence in your body connection.

5. Support and Empowerment: By the end of our session, you will feel supported, understood, and ready to continue your journey with renewed hope and actionable guidance—all within the comfort of your own space and pace.

Step 3: Subsequent Sessions

After our initial session, subsequent sessions are all about building momentum and deepening your progress. Each meeting is tailored to your evolving needs, ensuring we’re always working toward your goals in a way that feels empowering and achievable.

Here’s what you can expect:

1. Review and Adjust: We’ll start by reflecting on your experiences since the last session. What worked well? What challenges came up? This helps us refine your plan and adjust as needed.

2. Building Skills: Each session will introduce new tools and techniques, building on the foundation we’ve created. This could include sensory modulation, mobility work, posture improvement, or emotional regulation strategies—all aimed at strengthening your connection with your body.

3. Tracking Progress: We’ll celebrate wins, no matter how small, and address any roadblocks. This ensures you feel supported and see measurable progress in your journey.

4. Customization and Growth: Your needs may evolve, and our sessions will evolve with them. Whether it’s fine-tuning your recovery plan, focusing on specific challenges, or expanding your self-care toolkit, we’ll ensure your progress stays aligned with your goals.

5. Encouragement and Support: Every session is a space for you to feel heard, valued, and motivated. Together, we’ll build on your successes and tackle obstacles with care and creativity.

As we move forward, these sessions will help you establish lasting habits, deepen your respect for your body, and create sustainable, positive change. It’s not just about recovery—it’s about thriving.

Step 4: Empowered Recovery

The ultimate goal is to help you become your own advocate and guide in recovery.  True healing comes from understanding and connecting with your body on a deeper level. That’s why I focus on teaching you how to tune into your body’s natural rhythms, respect its cues, and respond in ways that promote balance and well-being.

Our sessions are not just about immediate results; they’re about giving you practical skills you can rely on for life. My role is to guide and support you as you learn to take charge of your health and recovery. By the end of our work together, you’ll feel confident in your ability to listen to your body, trust its wisdom, and make choices that align with your values and goals.

Recovery is not about dependence; it’s about freedom. My aim is to empower you to live fully, free from food and body struggles, with a renewed sense of respect for yourself, abilities, and your dreams.

Amelia Lindberg, physical therapist, provides sensory modulation training and movement-based recovery therapy to decrease body dysmorphia and disordered eating behaviors.
